How to Motivate your Leadership for Success (Part 1)
If you want to lead a high performance team, doing so by example will reap the greatest results. Powerful teams respect leaders who "walk the walk" and don't just "talk the talk". One way to lead by example is to exhibit self-confidence. A confident, effective leader displays personal power through their actions rather than by the title on their door or business card. Leaders who motivate, recognize that they don't have to micro-manage and are able to trust their team members to fulfill their work obligations and deadlines.
Self confident, effective leaders are respected by their team, not feared or intimidated. One of many ways to effect strong performance by your team, is to delegate tasks and responsibilities to your team members and believe in them whole heartedly. By doing so, it helps to build alliances and positive relationships within your team. Members learn to rely on one another, and with effective leadership, they don't feel threatened or territorial. In turn, the interdependence that manifests with your team makes the challenges of the tasks more exciting and quite doable.
A team with strong leadership will always feel they can accomplish together what they can't do alone. Listed below are some tips to maximize high performance from your team:
Element #1
- Identify which tasks and initiatives can be delegated and then decide who it should be assigned to.
- Be willing to hand over control of tasks and initiatives.
- Be honest with your team members and assign tasks fairly, based on ability and past performance.
- Clearly explain the desired results you are after.
- Have your team member(s) articulate (reflect) their understanding of the desired results back to you, to assure that everyone is on the same page.
- Show trust in your team and encourage trust between members.
- Establish and agree on project deadlines.
- Set intermediate goals and check to be sure the goals are being achieved with designated meetings on a regular basis.
- Delegate the "What" that needs to be accomplished, not the "How", and get out of the way. Do not micro-manage. With strong leadership your team members will know they can approach you if they need some help with the "How".
- Give frequent, positive feedback on the progress your team members are making.
- Offer incentives as a way of showing appreciation to your team members for their achievements.
Do not take back projects from your team members. Keep empowering them with guidance, reinforcement and necessary resources.

Element #2
Viewing your team as a valuable, contributing entity will instill confidence and create rising leadership within the ranks.
- Praise your team members publicly when they have performed well.
- Be very clear about what they are being praised for.
- Reprimand your team members in private and never subject them to public humiliation.
- Be very clear about what the reprimand is for, along with an action plan on how to rectify the matter.
- As a leader, your words are very powerful and will have a lot of impact. Choose them carefully.
- Be a calming force to your team.
- Create an atmosphere of visibility. Let them know you are available to them.
A successful leader has the ability to see beyond current challenges that a team faces. Creating an environment that is supportive, trusting, respectful, honest and kind, allows for teams to remain motivated and positive in the face of whatever challenges arise.
